Hey I started using Photoshop yesterday (thanks again for showing me that it's way more awsome than I thought ;D) and I'm having trouble getting a smooth border in it. Here's what I'm getting (oh and it's the off icon for a template I'm making so shhhh lol): and here whats I want (posting of what it looks like in PS when I make it: See how in PS its much lighter (lighter because I used some opacity in the stroke options) and smoother than the actual outcome. Help is much appreciated. ;D

Simply put, it's .gif's fault. .Gif causes the image to make all pixels 100% transparent, so when you have the border slightly less transparent, it changes it to 100%.
If you want it to look like that, png works best. Problem is, PNG doesn't get much support from browsers such as IE6, so it isn't often used.

Really doesn't look too bad on the template. Just would have looked better imo . EDIT: Ok I have another question then..... The border is kind of rigged now. Any way to smooth it out? Looks smooth before I save it into GIF format. Another GIF flaw? *tear*

Try, instead of using a stroke, to use an inner glow. Set it to Black, Normal, 100%, and play with the size/distance settings till it looks good. (keep em both under 2px though)
It should smooth it out.
Also, if you know what the color is going to be behind it (Window BG color) then you can just fill a layer underneath the star with that color. That way you can have it as .gif, have the less transparent stroke, and it is smooth.

Well the glow saved into gif format even worse so I think I'll put the windowbg into the back like you suggested. (though if thats the case then it's jpg for me. ;D )

Agh...lol....not seeing things correctly....just like the USB thing over at SoCal...lol...kk ill try it..;D
EDIT: Since I can't double post.....
Uhm yeah the inner glow didn't work for me either. So I just saved it in jpg form with the windowbg color in a layer under the icon and it look fantastic. Would've prefered a transparent gif but this works too.

Personally, I choose to avoid transparency every possibility I get. I only use it when I absolutely have to.
