Hey Guys! Let me introduce myself: my real name is Ed Crandell. I came this way because I searched "Steampunk Message Board" on Google. A couple of months ago, I had never heard of "steampunk." I read about it in one of the latest issues of Star Wars Insider. In 1998, I started writing a novel that I had conceived of as a kid. It was a cross between science fiction and a western. I finished it in 2002, and finally found a publisher in 2006. I was asked to pick a category for the novel by the publisher, but I could select only one, so I chose "Science Fiction." I myself have always described it as a sci-fi western. Once I saw the Star Wars Insider article though, I began thinking that I may have found the real category for my story! I was looking over some original notes I had made back in 1998 before I started writing my novel. One page was devoted to things I wanted in the novel. #4 on the list was: Jules Verne technology! One of the cities I describe to friends as being "Gotham City crossed with Victorian London."I would really like to share my ideas with you guys, and to find out from you if my story - West World - really would be considered steampunk - or an offshoot of some kind. I'm just really excited to find that there is even such a thing! I have just finished my second novel - Return to West World - and I am pretty confident that the publisher will like this one, as well ;D. I'm including my website info in the signature below, and I also have a video some fans made using my artwork: www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHFow2gCRJAHope to hear from you soon, Ed Crandell

So, is there a webmaster, or webmistress, that can point me in the right direction to find the ¨Steampunk¨thread that led me to XD-Designs? By the way, is there anyone that can tell me what XD'Designs is all about?

Return to West World by Ed Crandell The West World story is set on a planet in a far-off solar system. Return to West World is set a few years after the events of West World. While the first story introduced the reader to intergalactic “cowboys and Indians,” this latest installment in the planned trilogy adds starship pirates into the mix, and furthers the political intrigue began in the first novel. While the setting is otherworldly, many of the issues involved evoke the world we live in today: hybrid transportation, depletion of natural resources, and the protection of the environment. The core story of Return to West World remains the same as West World—the dangers of greed and prejudice, along with the consequences we suffer for the choices we make. While the mood and tone of Return to West World is a little darker than its predecessor, it still is a novel that is appropriate for readers of all ages. One reader of an advanced copy had this to say: “I would have to say that I absolutely loved [the story]. It was even better than the first novel. The dialogue seemed perfectly natural and fit the characters well, as did the actions and the decisions that each of them made. I especially enjoyed the political intrigue. It added another layer of depth to the storyline. [The story] had a natural crescendo and also maintained an excellent sense of suspense.”There is something for readers of all ages in Return to West World: there is action, adventure, intrigue, and a healthy dose of humor. The book is 286 pages in a 6” x 9” format, and is adorned with my own cover art and illustrations. While the official release date is January 3, 2009, the book is already available directly from the publisher—at [removed]—as well as most other online booksellers. For more information regarding Return to West World—character bios, excerpts, and more, please visit my website:[removed[ For those here at XD Designs, you might particularly want to check out my drawings of starships by selecting the "Starship Designs" tab at the top of the homepage.

Ok so i found this website that has a movie called west world made in 1973 about a futuristic western so did you just rip off a movie? www.imdb.com/title/tt0070909/ Alas, no. It would be pretty sad if it took my four years to copy an existing movie into a book! When I was trying to come up with a title I wanted something simple that would quickly tell the potential reader that it was both science fiction and a western. My actual inspiration for the title was Mike Myers film " Wayne's World." In fact, when I would get time to work on the book, I would sometimes sing: "It's West World, it's West World. It's party time - excellent!" (That's probably more embarrassing than if I would have plagiarized an old movie!!! ) Since the 1973 movie Westworld ( 1 word) seems to be rather obscure, I have never seen it on TV, or for sale at a movie store. What I can gather is that it is set at a futuristic theme park on Earth, and that it's about an unstoppable robot that is dead-set on killing someone (more like Terminator). My story is more a character study and morality tale set on a distant planet unrelated to Earth. It's more like Star Wars than Terminator.

I've actually found the original thread that led me to XD Designs. It's under ::Community::General Talk::Steampunk- goggles and funny hats for everyone!
The thread was started by someone who goes by the screen name of it might be snores. There doesn't seem to be a way to send this person a PM, and the e-mail I sent was returned as the address longer being in use. Would Matt, or any other XD Designs poster know how to contact this person? Thanks!

Hey there Ed. Sorry its taken me so long to reply. I'll log into my old email account and send you a message if you'd like. I'm pretty sure I'm the only one here with an interest in steampunk. I've never read your book, but I'd definately like to.
