The forum is 700px wide, which is usually the standard for ProBoards. If you have it any bigger, you'll run the risk of making people on a 1024x768 resolution get the dreaded horizontal scrollbar. Everybody hates that thing, and web designers try their best to stay clear of that =P.

No, but they are the background. If we remove them and make the forum wider, users with a less then 1024x768 resolution will have to use the scrollbar to view the forum, and we don't want that. Plus, we would have to remake quite a few images.

Yeah, still around 14% of internet users still have 800x600. 14% is a lot considering how many people use the 'net. Proof. I know you can say W3 don't own the web, but they do manage most of the widely used languages XHTML, HTML, CSS, XML, XSLT, etc.
