+Welcome to your WORST nightmare...+
BWAHAHAHA!!!*chokesspluttersdies*
It is still Earth, though perhaps not as we know it. It is present day - 2008 - and we are still the human race.
But we are not the only race.
The humans live alongside the creatures we read of in horror novels. The novels and movies are still there, of course. The vampires probably find Dracula very amusing. And Wolfman movies must hit close to home for shapeshifters and lycanthropes.
Two years ago, vampirism was declared legal in America. Vampires are no longer killed on sight - if they are, without a legal order of execution, it is classed as murder.
In most states in the USA shapeshifters are also legal citizens. Of
course, in some places they can be killed by anyone as long as after the death a blood test proves they weren't human.
Sick? Maybe. That's how the world is.
How that world is.
So now the human race co-exists with the monsters of your nightmares. Not always peacefully, not always happily. But they do it. What choice do they have but to accept it?
Monsters though they are, they are still very much like humans and aren't evil devil-spawn. Most of them aren't, anyway.
Likes humans, there are the good and the bad. Though after a few centuries a vampire can be known to grow rather sadistic.
When one of the preternatural creatures grows too nasty ... well, they law has learned from experience that keeping them in jail simply doesn't work.
Weretiger, 14th February 1994. Committed three murders, completely tearing apart the victims. They caught him, put him in an overnight jail cell. On that particular case nine died, four seriously injured after it tore away the iron bars. Well, it's really no surprise he was so ticked! Finally, an executioner was called in by name of Billy Colgane.
He killed the critter fairly quick.
So there is no jail system for the monsters. They go mean? Automatic death sentence. Hey, a lot less deaths since they made that rule. Go figure.
Yes, silver works. Against shapeshifters and vampires, at least. Witches, or Wicca, are actually still human so a good lead bullet would take them out. The fey (fairies) are not affected by silver at all. Shoot them point blank in the heart with a silver bullet and they'll laugh. Lead works well against fairies. Zombies. Ah, zombies ... Whatever the movies say, they are not brain eating creatures that make you one of them by taking a chomp out of your shoulder or wherever. They won't eat a brain unless the Animator who raised it orders it too. Or if the animator isn't powerful enough to control it. Zombie-ness isn't a virus. They are merely the dead raised from their grave. Walking corpses. The good animators can make them look human, so they aren't really rotted either. The only sure thing against a zombie is fire.
Ghouls are much like zombies - they are dead beings, that live in graveyards and hunt in packs. Now, they will attack a human. Powerful necromancers may be able to control them. A ghoul kill is messy, they tear their victims to pieces and eat what they can. They fear fire, and like zombies fire is probably the only really sure thing. Silver bullets slow them down considerably.
So, what do you think so far? Can you handle this world? If not, climb back to your beds and hide under the sheets.
Just remember my words the next dark night you wander outside of your warm home.
